Reviews & Commentary

Emeu Inn is pleased to have been hand picked by the editors of Beautiful Accommodation, Australia's discerning guide to unique places to stay. With only a handful of options selected by the editors in a region, this is a great honour both for Emeu Inn and our local tourism region."

Beautiful Accommodation - Jennifer Lamattina

April 2008
If you are going to stay in Heathcote, the Emeu Inn is the place to stay and to eat. Leslye is bright and bubbly. She is also one of those rare people that will try and tailor the stay to each individual person's unique requirements. Nothing is too much trouble and she goes the extra mile to make the experience as enjoyable as humanly possible. Showing me the decanting device was just another example of the level of service and attention that she gives her clients. If they were ever going to rename this establishment they should change it Oasis. Leslye's husband Fred is the chef, and a fine one at that! It's great to be able to eat a pleasant dinner, have a few glasses of wine, and then stumble about ten metres to bed.

“It has been lovingly restored to provide an exclusive food, wine and accommodation experience. … It comes together to provide quite an indulgent escape. But what we loved most was the attention to detail. … The guest rooms are beautifully presented and with Fred's passion for food, there seems to be complimentary tidbits everywhere - cake and walnut bread.”
Beautiful B&B and Small Hotels – Victoria & Tasmania by Jennifer Lamattina

“The most adventurous, globally aware and rewarding food is found at Emeu Inn. Despite chef Fred Thies' European heritage, the best dishes I've had there hailed from cultures as far-flung as South Africa (tuna spring rolls with harissa mayonnaise) and southeast Asia (Thies'Sri Lankan curry feast is legendary). There are also some appropriately robust dishes (classic New York sirloin and fries, for example) to wash down the local shiraz .”
Gourmet Traveller WINE by Max Allen February/March 2004

“…the Emeu Inn restaurant and b&b has served as the region's wine centre with owner Leslye Thies not only selling many Heathcote wines – a useful service as many wineries don't have cellar doors – but also providing crucial insider information to wine pilgrims.”
Gourmet Traveller WINE by Max Allen February/March 2004

“Once it was gold that brought hordes to Heathcote. Now it's wine., and bottles of the region's best reds fill the cellar of this old butcher's shop and pub.” 14/20
Good Food Guide 2004 edited by Sally Lewis

“A cosy guest lounge is ideal to relax and enjoy refreshments and there are always daily newspapers, books magazines and games for guest use. …Fred's mastery in the kitchen is obvious after perusing his imaginative menu, but as they say, the proof may well be in the pudding!”
Travel - Herald Sun by Peter Robinson 10 November 2002

“While opening the wine centre recently, the Minister for Tourism and Major Projects John Pandazopoulos said, ‘it was people such as Fred and Leslye who formed the backbone of Victorian regional tourism and the growing popularity of wine tourism. People like Fred and Leslye are making lifestyle decisions to move to the country,' he said. ‘When they do, they bring new ideas and new energy and rejuvenate the region.'”
The Weekly Times by Natalee Ward 14 March 2001

“Behind a discreet hanging sign on the main street of town is a haven of warm hospitality and good food and wine, both for drop-in diners and overnight guests. …The Emeu Inn's regional wine list , which offers both much sought-after and relatively little-known wines of the district, is especially noteworthy for its full-bodied and long-lived shiraz vintages. …and they go well with Fred Thies' robust European-influenced or bush-tucker flavoured dishes.”
